Hi everyone. I want to send along some personal news. Long story short, due to unforeseen circumstances I will respond to people about their Coffeeneuring Challenge results the week of December 11.

Longer story as follows. As many of you know, the Coffeeneuring Challenge is run by a lean, mean staff of two: the Intern and me. The team is augmented by Umbrella Works who does all the amazing design work and Falls Creek Outfitters who delivers the top-notch embroidered patch prizes for the challenge.

Some people have asked whether the Intern is a real person. He is. In real life, the Intern is my husband and tandem partner. I’ve also written about him here as Felkerino.

Over the weekend, Felkerino was hit by a car during a ride when a driver failed to stop at a stop sign. The driver then drove away.

That is unfortunate and I have many thoughts about a person leaving someone to suffer after an act like that. What is fortunate is that someone else called 911 and several club mates from D.C. Randonneurs helped us deal with the matter at hand and let me know what was happening. I thank everyone who stopped and helped during the incident.

As I write, the Intern aka Felkerino is still in hospital for at least a couple more days, and the recovery process will take time.

This is not an easy situation, yet we know it could have been much worse. I don’t know the road ahead, but am certain we will be applying various randonneuring techniques as we navigate it.

Needless to say, this has delayed some of the Coffeeneuring Challenge communiqué we had planned for this week. It will still happen. Things like coffeeneuring are a welcome activity during a time like this, but I’m advising that it will be the week of December 11 before I follow up with everyone.

In the meantime, if you have the time and inclination I encourage you to go for an Always Be Coffeeneuring ride. Push the pedals and raise a mug for those who may not have the ability  to do so right now. Fresh air, pedal strokes, and fellowship are tonics for the spirit.

ABC everybody, I’ll be talking with you soon.

Ooooh, nooo. What we all fear. We hope he heals quickly. Absolutely no rush, if ever, on the Coffeeneur part. I’m sure everyone will be understanding.

Mary, my heart goes out to you and Felkerino! Wishing him a speedy and complete recovery and thinking of both of you. I agree with Becky that there is no rush on the Coffeeneuring administrative work.

    Dear Mary,
When one cyclist gets hit, we all feel it. Obviously, there will be many of us pulling for you both during Felkerino’s recovery. Over the years of following the stories you two generate for us, we have become “virtual” family. (Even if some of us cannot accomplish those amazing rides you both are an inspiration.) Please do not hesitate to reach out to that family if we can add strength in any way.

Sorry to hear about your husband. It boggles the mind that someone could hit a cyclist with their car and leave them to die. I really hope they catch them, and punish them appropriately.

Mary you have to know that all of us are thinking of you and your intern in this horrible situation. As cyclists we all know the risks, but when it hits near us or to someone dear to us, it is no less of a terrible shock. I think we all (or most anyway) knew who your unfailing intern has been, and please give Felkerino our best wishes for a full and strong recovery.

Please do NOT prioritize us at this time, we will all be just fine with a delayed patch! Take care of you two and get to us whenever it is convenient, no matter how long that takes. I say this for me, and am sure everyone would agree. I know we will want to learn of updates when you feel up to that.

Deep heartfelt thoughts are with you and Felkerino Mary.

Ps… how is his bike ;’-)?

This is so horrible! I’m so sorry to hear about Felkerino! Truly awful for it to not only be someone who blew through a stop sign, but a hit and run. I have many thoughts on the lack of humanity of all this, but I will leave only my best thoughts and well wishes for Felkerino. I hope he is out of hospital soon and recovering well at home.

So sorry to read of the accident and the uncaring motorist’s response. We all live with risk. Some of the risk lies with us. Often it is out of our hands. I’m glad Felkerino is on the mend. Altho’ I didn’t complete the challenge this year, I’ve always enjoyed it. The challenge keeps me cycling longer into the fall months as a result. Take care. Merry Christmas and the best in 2024.

As others have said, we’re not the priority!
As cyclists we all know this can, has, does and might happen to us.
If we as a community can help ‘outsource’ anything you need to do for the challenge, do ask.
Otherwise we’ll be here when and if you’re ready.

Best wishes to the intern for a speedy recovery.
