Commuter Kryptonite: Wheel Eating Pothole on 15th Street

Hi. Can anyone tell me what purpose this big hole on 15th Street serves? This bad boy, located in front of Old Ebbitt Grill near the corner of 15th and G, is a hazard to cyclists.

Watch out! WHEEL EATER!

My sad camera can’t give an accurate picture of the depth of this hole, but I estimate it to be 10 inches squared and about four inches deep. Do I exaggerate? I don’t know, it’s a busy intersection which gives me no time to bust out my tape measure.

Here’s another view of my 15th Street nemesis that I took the day after the first photo.

Yes, I am a Big Bad Pothole.

Big, right?

There are a lot of potholes in the District, but this one instills extra fear in me every morning I ride by it. And that’s pretty much every day. If your wheel dips into this guy, you’re probably not riding out of it. And if you do, I want to hear your story and see your rim.

For this week, though, this pothole gives me no angst because

I’m
on
VACATION!
