Once again I’m late to the game with the results from last year’s Coffeeeneuring Challenge. Still, it’s exciting to see how the challenge continues to grow and over time and to gain a bit of insight into coffeeneurs over the years.
Note: this post has been updated based on some errors identified by fellow coffeeneurs.
Overall
After homologating all results, 490 individuals on Earth achieved official coffeeneur status in 2020. Amazing! Almost 500, but not quite so maybe we’ll break through that total this year. I hope so!
Trend Over Time
As you see in the chart below, the number of coffeeneurs trends up over time so keep up the good coffeeneuring work! A mere 12 people finished in 2011 and 490 coffeeneurs crossed the finish line 10 years later.
I don’t know why this graph won’t show the 2020 total, but I’ll reiterate here that it is 490 finishers.
Coffeeneuring Finishing Streaks
Like 2019, 2020 also saw more first-timers participate than any other group, with over 170 people completing the Coffeeneuring Challenge for the very first time. Congrats! Several people have multiple finishes, as you can see below. Well done to those keeping their Coffeeneuring Challenge streaks alive!
Four people have completed the challenge every year since it began in 2011, and 2 have completed each year except 2011. Another group of 15 have completed the challenge 8 out of 10 times, a dozen are 7-time finishers, and 16 have completed the challenge 6 times. Good work, everyone!
Coffeeneurs by Country
Now let’s look at the breakout by country. The 490 people who completed the 2020 Coffeeneuring Challenge represent 13 distinct countries. We have no countries to add to the magic map of coffeeneuring, perhaps this year a new country will represent.
Below are the number of finishers by country. At the end of the post, I’ve also included the breakout of cities outside the U.S. by country. You can see the number of coffeeneurs in Australia, Canada, Germany, and Japan has ticked up since 2019 – exciting! Special shout out to those who are putting their country on the map!

Christian, a fellow coffeeneur in Germany, who is also a cartographer in real life (I think?) created a heat map so we can quickly locate the popular coffeeneuring locales for 2020. See that below and thank you, Christian!
U.S. Coffeeneuring
Okay, let’s take a closer look at U.S. coffeeneuring, since that is where we currently see the most coffeeneurs – 428 of them, to be precise.
The following chart shows the states with the most coffeeneurs in 2020.
What does this chart tell us? It tells us that coffeeneuring is popular along both coasts, and that cold weather is no deterrent to coffeeneuring for those representing colder climates (looking at you, New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Minnesota, Massachusetts, Colorado, Illinois, and Indiana).

Coffeeneuring Cities
Washington, D.C., was the most popular home base of coffeeneurs in 2020, with 24 participants. Seattle, Washington, followed close behind with 19 finishers. Portland, Oregon boasted 13 finishers this year, and Pittsburgh and Minneapolis round out our top 5 with 11 and 9 finishers, respectively.
